From caring for kids' physical health to caring for their online health.
I spent the last 5 years building BraveCare - Pediatric Urgent Care, and I’m incredibly proud of the care we provided more than 50,000 times when kids were sick or hurt. Thru all those visits, a pandemic, riots, fires, ice-storms, etc… We got thousands of 5-star reviews and most importantly thumbs ups of approval from kiddos headed out the door of our clinics.
I’ve been to Brave Care 31 times as a parent and although I’ve transitioned out of my role as CEO, I continue to be a big fan and an appreciative parent.
As we stepped out of our Brave Care roles, my cofounder Asa Miller and I spent time thinking about what we wanted to do next. Important for both of us is a continued focus on kids, and as parents with young ones coming more online, we saw the huge need for more oversight, moderation and privacy built for kids under 12.
Two Kids in a Trench Coat...
All the big tech companies take a “Two-Kids-In-A-Trench-Coat” approach where they just ask a kid if they’re an adult and then they let them on the platform… exposing young kids to incredibly inappropriate & harmful content, and putting them at risk to online predators.
I owe all my professional success to the internet. It let me connect with others who shared my interests, despite growing up in a town in the middle of the Pacific Ocean… It let me build things that could reach and connect millions of people, and it's kept me constantly learning.
The internet can be an incredible partner for us, but for kids there needs to be a new standard for safety and privacy online. We’re excited to have the opportunity to build that for all kids, including our own.
I'd like to introduce you to Genie, every child's kind, fun, confidence-building friend. And it's free!
Genie serves as an infinite source of knowledge, creative play or empathetic conversation. While kids can message their friends and chat (pretty typical for a messaging app), Genie stays in every conversation as a moderator and companion to support friendly interactions between kids... and an AI partner for parents who can alert them, in real time, to concerning or dangerous behavior that would otherwise be hidden.
We're building Genie with your child’s safety and security as our top priority:
- Content moderation for inappropriate language, bullying, grooming & griefing.
- Privacy protections to limit the sharing of personal information like home addresses.
- Reporting and oversight to help parents stay aware of what their kid's are doing online.
- Watch for signs of anxiety, depression & self-harm and alert parents if found.
A companion for creation & education.
Genie can tell never-ending, choose-your-own-adventure stories with rich imagery, teach a kid as much as they want to learn about space or the ocean, create artwork of silly character or simply be there as a confidence-building friend for a child to talk to.
Best of all, Genie is free! No hidden fees, no trapdoors or paywalls for the most important feature: your kids' online safety.
Some things for your child to try - Ask Genie to:
- Tell them what a silly made-up word means and make a picture of it in the Encyclopedia Absurdica.
- Tell them a story.
- Tell them a joke.
- Answer their never-ending... How does? Why does? Who did? When did? Where is? ...
- Teach them words in a new language.
Genie is a fun way for:
- Cousins who don’t get to see each other often to stay connected.
- Classmate friends to talk outside of school.
- Teammates to stay in touch between practice & games.
- And in the future, safely meet new friends that share your interests or hobbies.
